How to Screen Suppliers in China

With over 20 years of experience helping clients buy from China, I've learned much about how to screen suppliers effectively. Here are some key points to consider when selecting a supplier:

1. Evaluate Stability and Experience

One of the first things I look at is how long the supplier has been in business. A well-established company usually has more stable operations and extensive experience. I also review their client list and case studies to understand their capabilities and reputation.

2. Assess Engineering Capability

Engineering capability is crucial. I check the qualifications of their technical team, their R&D capabilities, and whether they can provide detailed drawings and CAD files. This helps ensure that they can meet specific design and production requirements.

3. Examine Service and Support

Service and support are critical, especially for complex projects. I evaluate the quality of their customer service, response times, and after-sales support. A good supplier should be able to address issues quickly and provide ongoing assistance.

4. Check Production Capacity and Staffing

I assess their production facilities, equipment, and lines during on-site visits. I also look at their staffing levels to ensure they have enough skilled workers to meet production demands.

5. Review Quality Standards and Expertise

I review the supplier’s quality certifications, such as ISO certifications, and ask for samples or case studies of previous work. This helps me understand their production quality and standards.

6. Evaluate Logistics and Shipping Capabilities

Efficient logistics and shipping are vital for timely delivery. I check their shipping records, partnerships with logistics companies, and warehousing facilities. Good logistics management minimizes issues during transportation.

7. Consider Cost, Financial Stability, and Trustworthiness

While cost is important, I don’t focus solely on price. In addition, I assess the suppliers’ financial stability for further investigation to make prudent choices.
